We specialize in rare and scarce out-of-print and new books dealing with the Plains Indian Wars, George Armstrong Custer, Little Bighorn Battle, Great Sioux War of 1876, U. S. Army during the Plains Indian Wars, Western Forts, Northern Plains and Southwestern Indians, Buffalo Soldiers, and the Civil War. We're the best place to look on the web for Custer books.

Established in 1986, AST Press has published a series of important books for the military history reader or collector interested in the vital periods of the Plains Indian Wars and the Civil War. We also provide the production and editorial services for the annual magazine, Greasy Grass, published by the Custer Battlefield Historical & Museum Association. Our titles have especially focused on events connected with the Great Sioux War of 1876, particularly the legendary Battle of Little Bighorn of 1876 and the man most identified with that engagement, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer.

We also publish periodic catalogs listing used and rare books that focus on the Indian wars, especially in the post-Civil War period, and on Custer. Please check our current listings, which are frequently updated, and look for future new books that we publish. We also purchase books dealing with the subjects listed above -- anywhere from a single volume to extensive collections. When we buy a large collection, we will purchase the entire collection, not just the "choice" books. Please contact us when you are interested in selling your collection.

All our books are sold with a money-back guarantee, provided the book is returned in the same condition as shipped within 10 days of receipt.

EXCITING NEW LISTINGS: Rubbing Out Long Hair Pehin Hanska Kasota, The American Indian Story of the Little Big Horn in Art and Word, by Rodney G. Thomas. This is a marvelously produced book that is unique in the literature of Custeriana. Warrior art, some created within days after the Little Big Horn fight in keeping with centuries old fashion, has been even less appreciated for what it can "tell" about the battle. Now, for the first time, Thomas brings together all known art of the battle along with narrative interpretations that tie together art and word. Another must title for the Custer aficionado. Catalog # 5705; list price $50.00.

Crossing the Plains with Custer, by Paul Horsted, Ernest Grafe & Jon Nelson. This is a marvelous companion volume to the authors' 2002 book, the award-winning Exploring with Custer.  The new book's text is superb, and as in the earlier book, the photographs and maps, some in color, are outstanding. The earlier book covered Custer in the Black Hills in 1874. This book covers Custer's route from Fort Abraham Lincoln to the Black Hills. This is a must title for the Custer aficionado. Catalog # 5206; list price $75.00.

Also new is John Koster's Custer Survivor, which involves a new look at the possibility that Frank Finkel, Company C, survived the fighting on the main battlefield at Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876. Koster supposedly scoured public and private archives in Ohio and relied on forensic evidence to prove his theory. Catalog # 5258; list price $17.00.

Recently added to our listings is The Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick, who spoke in June at CBHMA. These copies are first editions and we have only a couple. Philbrick is a nationally renowned author whose Custer book has been as well received by the general public as Jim Donovan's book was two years ago. It's a well-written book, which may not reveal many new facts or interpretations for the reader familiar with the Little Big Horn but it is still a worthy edition to your library. Plus it's a good read! Catalog # 5756; list price $30.00.
