Hazen's critical response to George Custer's over-enthusiastic report of the Northern Pacific Railroad country observed during the latter's 1873 Yellowstone Expedition. Hazen had been stationed in the West for many years, before and after the Civil War, and criticized those who were merely passing through the lands, such as Custer in 1873. The two men had clashed in the wake of Custer's 1868 Battle at the Washita. In 1861, Hazen, then an infantry instructor at West Point, testified in Cadet Custer's behalf at the latter's court-martial. Booklet shows considerable wear in upper right corner and soiling on front and back covers. Likely was rebound at some point. Considerable foxing inside. Nonetheless, given its age, it is in excellent shape. Collectible - Very Good. Item #11053
