Custer's Last Battle

New York: Century Co., 1892. 1st edition. Hardcover. One of the most important and classic articles about Custer's last fight. Godfrey's article has frequently been reprinted, but this is the original, as published in The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, November 1891 to April 1892. Book's front cover is loose, but rest of it is intact. It shows considerable wear, given its age, especially on covers and spine. Book also includes James B. Fry's comments about the Godfrey article. According to bibliographer Michael O'Keefe, "This is Godfrey's documentation of the Battle of Little Big Horn, originally prepared as a speech before West Point in 1879, then supplemented by Godfrey's hearing Indian versions of the fight in 1886." O'Keefe calls it, "one of the best accounts because it was written by an educated participant who corresponded frequently with other battle participants." This was published 15 1/2 years after the battle, by which time Godfrey himself had lost much respect for Major Reno's behaviors at Little Big Horn. Collectible. Item #8973
